India is a patriarchal society. In fact, out of millions of literary works in the past, only few talks about women, their contributions, and their significant role in molding history and society. In schools, most of the history textbooks blatantly speak about kings and male leaders and not much about female characters.
Following the recent approval of the Maternity Benefit (Amended) Bill, 2016, working mothers are now entitled to a whole host of benefits. The amended bill now provides working mothers with paid maternity leave for 26 weeks instead of 12 weeks. Also, it allows for a work from home facility, if possible.
Overtime work is a norm in India. Overtime means the time worked in excess of an employee’s regular working hours. In India, regular working hours is 8 to 9 hours per day or 48 to 50 in a week, which depends upon the company an employee is employed under.
India’s working conditions and wages are way different from the ones in Western countries. Just like in many other countries, the official work week in the country is from Monday to Saturday, and working hours begin at 10 am to 6 pm. Unfortunately for laborers, overtime is the norm and many local companies do not compensate their workers for their overtime work.
